Art Class Trip

On Wednesday, October 28th, Mrs. Zent and thirteen art students went to Billings to explore the Yellowstone Art Museum and the MSU-Billings Northcut Steele Art Gallery and studios. The trip was inspired by Native American artist Star WallowingBull’s exhibit at YAM entitled “Futuristic Time Keepers.” Students took a guided tour through the YAM building, which they learned was the former Yellowstone County Jail, built in 1884. The exhibit featured several colored pencil drawings and acrylic paintings. The theme of the work focused on combining Native American cultural practices with the march of solar time, science, and history. The work is in the Pop Art style, using bold, bright colors and symbols/logos from pop culture. The exhibit runs through January 9th. After the tour, students worked with YAM Art Educator Angel Shandy to create their own works of art using collage and a space/robot theme.

After the museum, the group enjoyed lunch and arcade games at Pizza Ranch. The afternoon was spent at MSU-Billings touring the Art Department studios and a gallery visit led by artist and Associate Professor Keeara Rhoades, whose work focused on storytelling using photography and multimedia design. Her work is on display through November 19th. They ended their day with a short visit to the MSUB bookstore.
